Frequently Asked Questions

Is Strength Union a Powerlifting Gym?

Strength Union has powerlifting roots and many of our lifters compete as athletes in the sport of powerlifting. But Strength Union is also a general strength gym, weight loss gym, bodybuilding gym, and more, with the necessary equipment to meet your unique goals.

How do I begin?

We recommend beginning with the Introduction to Strength or a FREE Group Class to receive expert instruction and get your strength training journey started right. Coaching is recommended but not required at Strength Union and we have a 24/7 Gym Membership for you! Setup a Tour of the facility or start your Membership now.

What should I bring to my first training session?

We recommend arriving in athletic clothing ready to move. Flat, hard soled shoes are best. From there our coaches can guide you towards any other equipment that might be appropriate for you.

I am a beginner or I have never lifted before. Would this be a good fit for me?

Everyone deserves to be strong and Strength Union is dedicated to making strength training accessible to everyone. Even if you have never touched a barbell or weight before, we have the coaches and necessary equipment to meet you exactly where you are and to progress you at the rate at which you are improving. With our Intro to Strength and Team Training we are ready to get you started on your physical transformation right away.

As a female, won’t I get bulky muscles?

Women, in the absence of male hormones, will never become over-muscled or masculine from lifting weights. Women that lift weights experience increases in strength, capability, and sport performance. Women that strength train look like strong and confident women.  In the gym we proudly fly our Girls Who Powerlift banner.

Am I too old?

At Strength Union we have coached lifters in their 70’s, 80’s, and beyond.  You are never too old to receive the benefits of strength training. Strength training for seniors improves bone density, independence, longevity, and more.

I am overweight, would this be a good fit for me?

Yes absolutely. Strength training is one of the pillars of weight loss. End the cycle of constantly losing weight only to gain it all back. Build up the metabolic machinery that is your muscles to lose weight and keep it off for good. Not only that but stronger people are more capable people no matter their weight.

I have limitations or are injured; can I still train?

Most likely you will still be able to train. Please contact us with your unique limitations and we will get back to you right away. On the coaching staff we have both a Bachelor of Nursing and Doctor of Physical Therapy. In addition, our extensive equipment selection allows us to make accommodations for most.

What’s the difference between training and exercise?

Exercise is the act of working out for the sake of the activity. It’s the pleasure derived from getting hot, sweaty, or doing something hard. And there is nothing wrong with exercise, sometimes its exactly what we want. But training is the most direct route to your physical goal. Train with intention and planning to rapidly and predictably improve strength, fitness, and more. Start training now with guidance from our expert coaching staff either privately or in small groups.

How can I become a coach?
